The next heat wave is rolling in. You stay cool even on super hot days with these tricks!
With over 30 degrees, many are currently sitting in their apartments sweating. Those who work from home and have to look after the children simultaneously – thanks to heat-free days and school vacations – desperately need cooling down! Circulatory problems and night sweats do not have to be. Here’s how to remedy the situation – without air conditioning.

  1. Ventilate – but adequately!
You must ventilate even if you don’t want to open the window. However, one should remember to do this only in the early morning and late in the evening – shortly before bed. If you can’t create a draft in a small apartment, it’s best to open the front and back doors.

  1. Fan with air purification for allergy sufferers
Fans are real classics when it comes to comfortable room temperatures. In contrast to expensive air conditioners, they can save about 70 euros in annual electricity costs. Placed directly at the window or balcony door, they accelerate the air exchange. More modern models also have air purification functions. This is excellent news for people with pollen and dust allergies – not just in summer.

  1. do not bring unnecessary light into the darkness
During the day, reducing the sun’s rays as much as possible and lowering shutters or blinds is essential. If you do not have a permanently installed sunshade on the window, you can get thermal curtains or blackout blinds for little money at the hardware store.
  2. Heating carpet? Please don’t.
Carpets are not only cozy in the cold months, but they also help against cold feet. In summer, however, they store heat and give it off to the already overheated air in the room. Therefore: If possible, roll them up and keep them in the basement until their use becomes necessary again. It’s also better to banish blankets, pillows and heavy curtains to the closet during the summer.
  3. Cool bedroom – The warm air quickly enters our heads, especially at night. Circulatory problems or headaches the following morning can be the result. For a pleasant room climate, the “relative humidity” should be between 40 and 60 percent, according to “Verbraucherzentrale.” In dry heat, it helps to put the clothes horse with wet clothes in the bedroom. Houseplants such as rubber trees, palm trees and window leaves can also have a favourable effect on the indoor climate and even have a cooling effect.
  1. electrical devices
Not only for cost reasons, electrical devices such as smartphones, laptops or tablets should not be plugged into the charger unnecessarily. During the charging process, the machines heat up and give off heat to the air in the room. Even when they are not being used or are switched to standby. As does television, conventional halogen and incandescent lamps also generate waste heat. Their use should be minimal, and the evening should instead be spent outdoors.

  1. paddling pool
If nothing else helps, maybe this will: fill an inflatable children’s paddling pool with cold water and add a few ice cubes if needed. Then hang your feet in it and relax. A hot bottle filled with ice water is also an excellent tip on hot days. And what we advise our children also applies to us: drink, drink, drink!
